01Start from your daily workflow#
List what you do every day: connect, inspect schema, run SELECT/UPDATE, export rows. Ignore features you touch once a quarter.
- Do you only use MySQL? A single-engine client is often faster
- Do you jump between many tables? Palette search beats tree clicking
- Do you touch production? Read-only + color tags are non-negotiable
02Mac-specific checks#
Prefer native or well-packaged apps with Apple Silicon builds, reasonable memory use, and shortcuts that do not fight macOS.
- Apple Silicon (arm64) build when available
- Cold start that does not freeze your first coffee
- Shortcuts that feel like IntelliJ / VS Code, not a foreign IDE
03Suites vs focused clients#
Navicat-style suites and universal JDBC tools win when you admin many engines. If MySQL is the only tab you open all week, a focused client usually wins on startup time and mental load.
04How to trial in one hour#
Download a macOS build, connect to staging (not production), and recreate one named connection. Open a database you use daily, search for a table by name, run a SELECT, and filter the grid. If that loop feels shorter than your current tool, keep going for a few days.
05Try VloamDb before you commit#
VloamDb is a MySQL-only desktop client for macOS and Windows: Double-Shift table search, starred databases / groups, production color tags with optional read-only, and local-first data. Sign in for a 15-day full trial, then unlock once for $4.99 if it fits—not an auto-renewing seat subscription.
